1.               Introduction

The USMC NBCD Equipment Program requires the storage and deployment of approximately 30 TACMN (Table of Authorized Materiel Control Number) items. Some of these items are “soft goods” and if they are received out of the original packaging, may require new protective packaging (cases or containers for storage). This document outlines the Contractor’s proposed solution.

2.               Purpose/Objective

The purpose of the Individual Storage Container (ISC) is to provide protection for items while maintaining ease of handling and inventory.

The following criteria were considered while optimizing the design of the ISC.

  • The efficiency of filling the cube of the ISC with individual items
  • The efficiency of filling a pallet with the ISCs
  • The efficiency of storage capacity utilization
  • The ability to access goods in a manageable quantity for life cycle maintenance.
  • The efficiency of filling a palcon with the ISCs
  • Limiting the number of types of ISCs needed.

3.               Scope

ISC planning was focused on the most critical items in the inventory. These are the items that we plan on handling the most and are of sufficient bulk and quantity to take up 90% of the cube for a typical deployment. The remaining 10% of the items will either be individually palletized, or placed into the ISCs as required.

4.               Design Considerations

For palletization considerations, the length, width and height of the containers should be in multiples of 8 or 12 inches, yet the container should be able to hold and protect an appropriate amount of the item. A container 24” long by 16” wide by 16” high meets both criteria for the suits, and boots.

24” long by 16” wide by 16” high

Gloves are significantly smaller items and require a smaller, more manageable ISC. The recommended size is 15” long, by 12.25” wide, by 12” high.

Although these ISCs are designed specifically for the top 3 items, they are general enough to be used to pack other items such as dosimeters, detector paper, hoods, second skins, and other loose items.

6. Palletization

There are two configurations for the pallets: one for the Large ISC and another for the Small ISC.

6.1 Large ISCs on a Pallet

This configuration is an exact fit for the pallet.

The total number of Large ISCs on a pallet is 15.

6.2 Small ISCs on a Pallet

This configuration has a 0.5" pallet overhang fore and aft and a 2.5" pallet overhang right and left.

The total number of Small ISCs on a pallet is 36.
